30 day hair challenge + update!

I started a 30 day hair challenge on Monday.

DAY 1: HOMEMADE HAIR MASK (JBCO, Coconut oil, HONEY, egg) + trim

DAY 2: Cornrows

DAY 3-14: MIST HAIR WITH GLYCERIN + WATER MIX + OIL WITH JBCO MORNING AND NIGHT (CO-WASH HAIR ON SUNDAYS - GENTLY WITH TEPID WATER)

DAY 15: SHAMPOO WITH BLACK SOAP, CONDITION THEN NEW Cornrows

DAY 16-30: MIST HAIR WITH GLYCERIN + WATER MIX + OIL WITH JBCO MORNING AND NIGHT (CO-WASH HAIR ON SUNDAYS - GENTLY WITH TEPID WATER)

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!
The challenge was a success. My edges filled out really well and my hair is longer (of course because hair grows) but most importantly fuller and healthier.

Sorry about the blurry pics. I had just taken out the cornrows and the lighting is bad.

10 sulphate free shampoos + conditioners

Sulphates are the component in shampoos +  soaps that create a foamy lather and sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) is the most commonly used version. They strip the moisture from your hair and skin and SLS is a common skin irritant, so why would you want that anywhere near you?

I have super sensitive skin, so for years I have used natural soaps like Dudu Osun (African black soap) but I never bothered with using anything special for my hair. Going on a natural hair journey helped with exposing me to the advantages + disadvantages of certain products so I just want to share a list of 10 sulphate free products that I've tried or heard that are particularly great for most hair types:

1.KIEHL'S SUPERBLY SMOOTHING ARGAN SHAMPOO
2. MOP C-SYSTEM, CLEAN SHAMPOO
3. HONEY'DO SHAMPOO
4. OUIDAD MOISTURE LOCK LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER
5. FEKKAI ESSENTIAL SHEA CONDITIONER
6. DUDU OSUN (AFRICAN BLACK SOAP)
7. YES TO CARROTS PAMPERING CONDITIONER
8. MIXED CHICKS LEAVE IN CONDITIONER
9. ORGANIX RENEWING MOROCCAN ARGAN OIL SHAMPOO
10. GIOVANNI  NUTRAFIX HAIR RECONSTRUCTOR

Sealing your ends

This is basically locking the moisture in your hair. There are a number of ways to seal your ends and over the past year or so I have picked up some tips which have helped me to keep my ends
 moisturised.
Snip Snip
The most important step is to always ensure your ends are trimmed every 2-3 months to get rid of split ends, because if your hair is split it can't retain moisture. So clip them off.

Wet hair?
Water is so important for your hair + is the best + most natural form of moisture. Your hair should be damp + not wet. Normally after washing my hair, I flick it around to get as much water out then I use a towel and pat my hair (not rub). After my hair is damp enough, I apply my butter oil.

**After saturating my hair with water, I then use Aussie's 3-min reconstructor deep cond. as a leave-in conditioner (1 teaspoon).

Oils or Butters?
Well this really depends on your preference but I find that Shea butter works better for me because it's thicker so I have more control over it when I apply it to my ends +  my sister loves Jamaican Castor oil or a light oils like argan oil, olive oil + coconut oil. These are popular choices for sealing your ends (or why not try mixing them) retaining moisture.

After Oil?
Protective styles like flat twists, braids etc are an option but for those with a TWA like me, you could do Bantu knots with bobby pins.

Stop touching your hair
Low manipulation is the best way to grow your hair, especially when your hair is wet and fragile, therefore more prone to breakage.

Ageing ends
The further away from the root, the older it is. So of course your ends are pretty old so sometimes they need more nutrient so double up/ triple up on the oils because of lower sebum access.

The great debate

The battle of the hair. What is good hair? I believe it really depends on the person, if you like your hair relaxed or natural, it does not matter, just keep it healthy and love it. Like Kim Coles said it's all about SELF-LOVE no matter your hair texture or skin colour. God made you so unique, it's crazy because I'm black but not the same as my sister or my brothers, I am unique and as corny as it sounds so are you. LOVE YOURSELF.

I will try and look for the full video, but over here in UK we don't get any US programs unless it's downloaded and in this case, it has been hard to find one.
